For a homeowner, the shutters might be carefully painted to appear exactly like the exterior of a home. A large portion of the shutters can be coloured to match the brick walls of the house with the top of the shutters painted brown to match a wood roof.

Businesses have the option to turn their shutters into a form of marketing. A huge logo or slogan could be painted onto the shutters. This way, more potential customers are drawn from those who walk or drive by the establishment. Standard gray metal would not have such an effect.
